What is BSCG Certified Drug Free?

If NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Sport are the gold standard, BSCG Certified Drug Free is the platinum.

BSCG (Banned Substances Control Group) tests for 450+ substances — that's 160 more than NSF (290) and 165 more than Informed Sport (285). And it was founded by the guy who literally ran the drug testing lab for the Olympics.

The Backstory

BSCG was created in the mid-2000s by Dr. Don Catlin and his son Oliver Catlin. Dr. Catlin directed the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory — the lab that conducted drug testing for the Olympic Games, the NFL, NCAA, and dozens of other organizations for over 25 years.

When Dr. Catlin retired from the Olympic lab, he saw a gap: athletes were getting burned by contaminated supplements, and the existing testing programs weren't comprehensive enough. So he built something better.

BSCG's testing menu includes:

  • 400 substances on the WADA Prohibited List (covers everything NSF and Informed Sport test for)
  • 50 additional prescription, over-the-counter, and illicit drugs not banned in sport but harmful to health
  • Full WADA Prohibited List coverage plus drugs like opioids, benzodiazepines, and other prescription medications that could show up as contaminants

The 5 BSCG Programs

BSCG isn't just one certification. They offer five different programs depending on who you are:

1. BSCG Certified Drug Free

The flagship. Every finished product lot is tested for 450+ substances. Includes annual label claim verification, contaminant testing, and an initial GMP compliance audit.

Best for: Professional athletes, military service members, first responders, anyone who needs the absolute highest level of assurance.

2. BSCG Certified Quality

Annual testing program for consumer protection and retail compliance. Tests for label claims, heavy metals, pesticides, microbiological agents, AND 450+ banned substances.

Best for: Retailers, consumer-facing brands who want to demonstrate quality beyond GMP.

3. BSCG Certified CBD

Specifically for hemp/CBD products. Every lot tested for 450+ banned substances plus cannabinoid verification (CBD content claims + THC limits). Every 10th lot gets heavy metals, pesticides, and microbiological screening.

Best for: CBD and hemp supplement brands.

4. BSCG Certified GMP

Verifies that brands comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices at the brand level (not just the manufacturer level). Deep dive into labels, claims, ingredients, and QC process.

Best for: Brands that use contract manufacturers and want to verify their own compliance.

5. BSCG Certified Facility

Onsite manufacturing facility audit for GMP compliance. Two-year audit cycle using independent experienced auditors.

Best for: Manufacturers, contract manufacturers, facilities.

BSCG vs NSF vs Informed Sport

Feature BSCG NSF Certified for Sport Informed Sport
Substances tested 450+ 290 285+
Testing frequency Every lot Production lots Every batch + blind post-cert
GMP audit Initial + ongoing Annual/bi-annual Yes
Rx drug testing Yes (50 additional) No No
Founded by Olympic Lab director Public health org (1944) UK anti-doping lab
Recognized by UFC, NBA, LPGA, DOD USADA, MLB, NHL, NFL NFL, NCAA, MLB, WADA

The practical difference: BSCG tests for everything NSF and Informed Sport test for, plus an additional 50 prescription and illicit drugs. If your product passes BSCG, it passes everything else by default.

The trade-off: fewer consumer brands carry BSCG because it's more expensive and less well-known than NSF or Informed Sport. You'll find it more often in professional and military applications.

FAQ

What does BSCG certified mean?

BSCG Certified Drug Free means every production lot of that product has been independently tested for 450+ banned substances — including 400 on the WADA Prohibited List and 50 additional prescription, over-the-counter, and illicit drugs. It also includes label claim verification, contaminant testing, and an initial GMP compliance audit. It's the most comprehensive third-party certification available.

Is BSCG better than NSF Certified for Sport?

BSCG tests for more substances (450+ vs NSF's 290), including 50 prescription and illicit drugs that NSF doesn't cover. BSCG was also founded by the director of the UCLA Olympic drug testing lab. However, NSF has broader recognition among US professional leagues (MLB, NHL, NFL). Both are legitimate gold-standard programs. If a product carries either certification, you're in good hands.

How do I find BSCG certified products?

You can search the BSCG certified product database at bscg.org/certified-drug-free-database by entering a lot number, product name, brand, or category. On our site, products carrying BSCG certification are tagged and appear in our Certified Safe collection.

Why don't more brands have BSCG certification?

BSCG certification is more expensive and less well-known than NSF or Informed Sport in the consumer supplement space. It's more commonly found in professional athletics and military applications where the absolute highest level of testing is required. As awareness grows, more consumer brands are seeking BSCG certification.

How much does BSCG certification cost for brands?

BSCG doesn't publicly list pricing — it varies by program type (Drug Free vs Quality vs CBD), number of products, and testing frequency. Contact BSCG directly at info@bscg.org or 1-800-920-6605 for a quote.
