Best Third-Party Tested Supplement Brands (2026)
"Third-party tested" has become a marketing buzzword. Every brand slaps it on their website. But there's a massive difference between a brand that sends one product to a lab once and a brand that certifies their entire line through NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport — where every batch of every certified product is tested for 285-290 banned substances before it ships.
I've spent 14 years in this industry and built an AI system that tracks certification status across 2,000+ products. Here's which brands actually walk the walk, ranked by the depth and quality of their certification programs.
How We Rank: Certification Quality Tiers
Not all certifications are equal. Here's the hierarchy:
| Certification | What It Tests | Rigor | Who Uses It |
|---|---|---|---|
| NSF Certified for Sport | 290+ banned substances, label accuracy, GMP audit | Highest | NFL, MLB, NHL, PGA, LPGA |
| Informed Sport | 285+ banned substances per batch | Highest | Premier League, UFC, Olympic athletes |
| Informed Choice | Same as Informed Sport but monthly testing (not every batch) | High | Athletes in non-Olympic sports |
| BSCG Certified Drug Free | 558+ substances including stimulants, narcotics, masking agents | Highest | Boxing, MMA, Olympic |
| NSF GMP Registration | Manufacturing quality only — NOT banned substance testing | Base | General consumers |
| "Third-party tested" (unspecified) | Could be anything — often just label accuracy | Unknown | Marketing claims |
When a brand says "third-party tested" without naming the certification body, that's a yellow flag. It might mean they sent a sample to a generic lab to verify the label matches the contents. That's not the same as having every batch screened for banned substances by NSF or LGC (the lab behind Informed Sport).
The Rankings
Tier 1: Deep Certification Programs
These brands have committed to certifying a significant portion of their product line through the highest-quality programs.
1. KAGED — 33+ Informed Sport Certifications
KAGED leads the industry. Their entire pre-workout line, protein line, and most of their standalone ingredients carry Informed Sport certification. This isn't an accident — founder Kris Gethin built the brand around transparency and testing from day one.
Certified products we carry:
- KAGED Pre-Kaged Pre-Workout — Informed Sport
- KAGED Pre-Kaged Elite — Informed Sport
- KAGED Creatine HCl — Informed Sport
- KAGED Mindset Nootropic — Informed Sport
- KAGED Outlive 100 Greens — Informed Sport
- KAGED Whey Protein Isolate — Informed Sport
If you're a tested athlete and you want to simplify your life, KAGED is the easiest choice. Almost everything they make is certified.
2. Raw Nutrition (CBUM Series) — 21+ Informed Sport Certifications
Chris Bumstead's line has rapidly expanded its certification program. The CBUM Series — including Thavage, Thuper Thavage, and Itholate protein — carries Informed Sport across most SKUs.
Certified products we carry:
- CBUM Thavage Pre-Workout — Informed Sport
- CBUM Thuper Thavage — Informed Sport
- CBUM Itholate ISO Protein — Informed Sport
- Raw Nutrition Creatine — Informed Sport
- Raw Nutrition EAA — Informed Sport
3. Cellucor / C4 — NSF Certified for Sport
Cellucor has been in the certification game longer than most. Their C4 line carries NSF Certified for Sport — the certification recognized by the NFL, MLB, NHL, and PGA. If your sport's governing body specifically requires NSF (some do), Cellucor is a safe bet.
Certified products we carry:
- C4 Original Pre-Workout — NSF Certified for Sport
- C4 Ultimate Pre-Workout — NSF Certified for Sport
- C4 Ultimate Shred — NSF Certified for Sport
- Cellucor Alpha Amino BCAAs — NSF Certified for Sport
Tier 2: Growing Certification Programs
These brands have started certifying products but haven't gone as deep as Tier 1.
4. Axe & Sledge — 6+ Informed Choice Certifications
Seth Feroce's brand carries Informed Choice on key products. Informed Choice uses the same testing methodology as Informed Sport but on a monthly batch schedule rather than every batch. Still excellent — and these are some of the best-formulated products on the market.
Certified products we carry:
- Axe & Sledge Hydraulic — Informed Choice
- Axe & Sledge Farm Fed Protein — Informed Choice
- Axe & Sledge The Grind EAAs — Informed Choice
- Axe & Sledge Ignition Switch — Informed Choice
5. Bucked Up (DAS Labs) — NSF on Essentials Line
Bucked Up has moved their Essentials line into NSF certification. Their core pre-workout line isn't fully certified yet, but the Essentials products — creatine, protein, multivitamin — carry NSF marks.
Certified products we carry:
- Bucked Up Essentials Creatine — NSF
- Bucked Up Essentials — NSF
6. Core Nutritionals — Informed Sport (Select Products)
Doug Miller's brand has been expanding Informed Sport certifications, particularly on their protein and creatine lines.
Certified products we carry:
- Core Nutritionals Creatine — quality manufacturing
- Core Nutritionals ISO Clear — transparent formulas
Tier 3: GMP Certified, Not Banned-Substance Certified
These are solid brands manufactured in US GMP facilities with quality controls — they just haven't invested in sport-specific certification programs yet. Their products are well-made, but if you're a tested athlete who needs the certification badge, you'll want to stick with Tier 1-2.
Brands in this tier include: Alpha Lion, Blackstone Labs, Condemned Labz, Chemix, Black Magic, and many of the brands we carry. GMP manufacturing is not the same as third-party sport certification, but it's also not nothing. These products are made in FDA-regulated US facilities with documented quality controls.
How to Verify a Certification Yourself
Don't take a brand's word for it. Here's how to check:
- Informed Sport: sport.wetestyoutrust.com — search by product name or brand
- NSF Certified for Sport: nsfsport.com — search their certified product database
- BSCG: bscg.org — search certified products
If a product claims certification but doesn't appear in these databases, the certification may have lapsed or never existed. We cover this in detail in our certification verification guide.
The Bottom Line
If you're a tested athlete, buy from Tier 1 brands. The certification adds roughly $0.50-1.00 per container to the cost — that's the cheapest insurance policy for your eligibility you'll ever find.
If you're not a tested athlete but you want quality assurance, Tier 2-3 brands are excellent choices. US-made GMP manufacturing is already a strong quality foundation. Third-party sport certification is the extra layer that tested athletes need.
Every product on our site has been screened by Oracle — our AI system that identifies every ingredient, checks it against banned substance lists, and flags compliance risks. Whether the product is certified or not, you'll see the compliance data.

FAQ
What's the difference between NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Sport?
Both test for 285-290+ banned substances per batch. NSF also audits the manufacturing facility and verifies label accuracy. Informed Sport (run by LGC) focuses on batch-level banned substance testing. Both are gold-standard. Some sports leagues specify one over the other — check with your governing body.
Does "GMP certified" mean a product is third-party tested for banned substances?
No. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certification means the facility follows FDA-regulated manufacturing standards — clean rooms, documented processes, quality controls. It does NOT test for banned substances in the finished product. GMP is about manufacturing quality. NSF/Informed Sport is about what's in the product.
Can a brand lose its certification?
Yes. Certifications must be renewed and each batch must pass testing. If a brand reformulates, changes manufacturers, or a batch fails testing, the certification can be suspended or revoked. This is why you should always verify current certification status in the databases linked above.
Why don't all brands get certified?
Cost and complexity. NSF and Informed Sport certification requires ongoing batch testing, facility audits, and documentation. For a brand with 50+ SKUs, that's a significant investment. Some brands choose to certify their top sellers and leave the rest uncertified. Others don't pursue it because their customer base isn't primarily tested athletes.
